Chinese Qigong - 3 DanTians

Qigong Dantian (Dan Tian)

In Qigong practice, the term DanTian (丹田) refers to the 3 main energy centers in the body: the Upper DanTian, Middle DanTian, and the Lower DanTian. When used by itself, it usually means the Lower DanTian, which is the main storage center of Qi energy. It is often translated to mean "Elixir Field" and is also known as QiHai, the "Sea" or "Ocean of Qi."

The 3 DanTians:

  • Upper DanTian (上丹田, Shang DanTian): This energy center is associated with wisdom. It is located at the level between the eyebrows, in the middle of the head.
  • Middle DanTian (中丹田, Zhong DanTian): This energy center is associated with the heart, love and compassion. It is located at the level of the heart, in the middle of the chest.
  • Lower DanTian (下丹田, Xia DanTian): This energy center is associated with sexual energy, physical prowess and vitality. It is located about three finger widths below the naval, in the center of the lower abdomen.

The 3 Dantians are associated with a basic human function, and as the main energy centers become more balanced and integrated, so does the quality of our lives.
